Recruiting and Hiring Practices of Northeast Ohio Employers Revealed

The 2015 ERC Hiring Trends & Practices Survey, which assesses the responses of 102 Northeast Ohio organizations, shows that well over a half (66%) of local employers are currently not using a formal applicant tracking system in their recruitment and hiring efforts. The most common reason, as cited by 45% of employers, is that their existing internal process is sufficient. In addition, nearly one-fourth of participating organizations also acknowledge a lack of resources as a reason for not implementing a formal applicant tracking system.

For the 34% of local organizations that do utilize this type of system, ADP is most commonly mentioned as a vendor.

Among the plethora of selection methods available to HR professionals, the most commonly used are the traditional interview, background screening, and reference checks. Nearly all survey participants (98%) conduct face-to-face interviews when selecting a majority of candidates, with 25% more organizations utilizing second interviews for exempt versus non-exempt positions.

Only 9% of participants say they do not conduct reference checks. For those organizations that do conduct reference checks, they are used most commonly to gather the following information: dates of previous employment (76% of employers), place of previous employment (73%) and job title or position held (73%) by the applicant.

Attendance records, breaks in employment, and reasons for leaving a previous position are among other sought-out details.

If a reference check happens to adversely affect the decision-making process, 16% of employers say they would communicate this result to potential employees.

Local organizations appear more willing to be explicit when it comes to poor background screening results.

In fact, over half (55%) of respondents communicate this reason for not hiring to applicants. Furthermore, 51% employers would do the same if an applicant failed a drug test.

However, these are not the only deal-breakers when it comes to passing up a candidate for a position. The top five most commonly-cited reasons organizations would not hire a candidate can be seen below:
